Murano glass is a glass craft that has been created one by one by a limited number of artisans on Murano Island, a small island in Venice, Northern Italy, and has been handed down for about 1000 years. It is generally called Venetian glass, and like Arita ware and Kutani ware in Japan, it can be said to be a traditional Italian craft that bears the name of the place. Murano Island is also called the "Island of Glass" and is still densely populated with glass workshops, but its origins date back to when Venice was still a country called the Republic of Venice, when the government of the Republic of Venice imprisoned glass craftsmen and their families on Murano Island to prevent advanced glass technology from leaking out of the country.
